Well we survived Easter.. happily enough. As I've gotten older I seem to dread candy-centered holidays. Our church does little toys, erasers, bubble necklaces, etc in the plastic eggs for their Easter hunts so there's not much to deal with 'candy' there. And this year I got little scooby two big eggs that had PEZ in them. She'd been wanting me to get her pez for some time.. like I was depriving her or something. Thank God she wanted Pez and not peeps though right? And we got big plastic eggs with tattoos in them. They were nick themed - sponge bob, dora, etc. So no candy there. And I got her bubbles (this before the Easter egg hunt where she racked up on the bubbles) which were another thing she'd been begging for. Two cute stuffed animals - a bunny and a bear - my husband wanted to get the bear and well what is Easter without a bunny so she got both. She had a couple other candies in plastic eggs.. just a little though. She was happy with what she got and didn't really notice the 'lightness' on the candy. I'm the 'mean mommy' who always says how bad stuff is and don't just let her have whatever anyway so I think she appreciates it more. When I was a kid at Christmas my parents always put fruit in our stockings so stockings weren't exactly tops on my list for opening on Christmas morning. They grew up during the time of the great depression and having fresh fruit in winter was a welcome treat for them as kids. So it was a tradition that they wanted to pass on to their children. I suppose they appreciated the fruit so much more than I did. But I think its the same concept scooby appreciates what I don't let her take for granted.

For anyone wondering skating season is off to an okay start. Two competitions so far. Two third place finishes. Scooby wanted firsts .. but third gets medals and well its better than last. Mommy always says.. "somebody has to finish first, somebody has to finish last, somebody finishes at every place in between." Every competition I worry that it will be the one where she finishes fourth (or fifth or sixth or whatever doesn't make it to the podium).

After Valentines' Day

Little scooby has been sick the past couple of days but is back to normal now. She suffered some horrible flu bug.. or food poisoning or something. I don't know. The weather here fluctuates tremendously. It was a beautiful 74 to 75 degrees today. I would've loved to have been outside enjoying it. Tomorrow it is only supposed to get up into the 40s and may get cold enough rate snow. Its hard to imagine with as warm is it was today. But the constantly changing weather must take a toll on a child's immune system. Little scooby ate some of those hearts with the words on them. She got them in a Valentine at school. She didn't know they had gelatin in them. It was exactly EASY to find the ingredients listed on the box. Well now we know. The other night I ate my husband's veggie burger by mistake. I had no idea. He got really upset that I ate HIS burger. I certainly didn't eat something with dairy in it on PURPOSE. The thought grosses me out. But I have much the same reaction that I gave my daughter about the hearts. Now I know to be more careful.. there's nothing we can do after it has already happening. The gelatin probably gave her food poisoning.

Today little scooby got PB&J, peach flavoured soy yoghurt, orange slices, and apple minute maid.

Happy Valentine's Day

Not much to post today. In honor of Valentine's Day I decided to make little scooby heart shaped piggies in the blankets. I cut smart dogs in quarters. Put two next to each other and shaped dough around them. I tried to make the point corner to be flatter than the parts that wrapped around the veggie dogs so they would bake up somewhat even. They turned out nice. Of course she had a mixed fruit cup and soy yogurt and minute-maid fruit punch to drink.

Wonderbread Rant

As some of you may know my daughter on recently (within the last year) started to eat sliced bread. Wonderbread is about the only vegan whitebread that I know of. If you know of any other please fill me in. Anyway, wonderbread now has like 5 new varieties. All of these new varieties have dairy in them. I had trouble finding one loaf of regular (vegan) wonderbread this weekend. I'm not sure what we can do about this.. write wonderbread, complain to managers at the stores, etc. But we need to let them know that we appreciate having a vegan option in wonderbread available to us.

Today's lunch for little scooby consisted of smartdeli bologna and garlic hummus on wonderbread. A strawberry O'soy yoghurt, sliced oranges and an apple-grape minute maid. Like I said in another post I haven't been too creative of late with the lunch ideas.

My stress level is going down somewhat as my daughter's programs seem to be coming along nicely. I worry too much about her messing up. She can only do her best - and that is starting to look pretty good. So I'm happy. I can do my somebody has to finish first, somebody has to finish last, and somebody has to finish every place in between so all that really matters is that you do your best speech.

Welcome Back!

Well I haven't been doing much creative with the food since school has been back in session. I bought some trail mix that I've been dividing up into little ziplock bags for her afternoon snack. So lil scooby is getting trail mix, fruit cups, soy yoghurt and minute-maid apple grape juice in her lunchbox pretty much everyday. And she has had for her sandwiches this week hummus with sliced olives on whole wheat pita, pb&j and smartdog pigs'n'blankets - repeating a couple of meals. So not a lot to post there. We've been going thru a lot of issues this past week. She's got in trouble for tattle-telling and for sticking her tongue out. We talked about this some last night - she was punished for the sticking her tongue earlier this week when I made her write "I will not stick my tongue out" ten times (it took a good 15-20 minutes to do so it was no light punishment). Anyway she said that the other kids had called her fat and that that was why she had stuck her tongue out (more than once). Well she gets in trouble for tattle-telling often so what is she supposed to do. Agh. I believe what she says about the kids saying she was fat.. she's asked me before if I thought she was skinny. She's on the high end of normal weight range so definitely not skinny/underweight but not fat/overweight either. Though she has a much more muscular/athletic build than the average 6 year old.

Oh Congratulations to Tanith Belbin on her American citizenship December 31st. We look forward to Turin. And I added a link to Tanith/Ben at Nationals on ESPN.

Merry Christmas

Well we had our office Christmas party this year. I elected not to participate. I did end up eating a few peanuts and broccoli, carrots and califlower. There was after all a few things that I could eat. Not enough that I felt the need to chip in money towards buying the meat/cheese tray or cook a nice vegan dish to share with everyone else. People always push me to eat just something. I'd rather not - I'd feel less obligated to cook or chip in. There were lots of vegetarian (non-vegan items) there as well. Sometimes I get really tired of being vegan. Not that I actually want to eat non-vegan foods. I just get tired of telling people I don't eat cake, cheese, etc. There was even a cake that someone said was made with coke (which would mean it was vegan right) - nope not a chance had marshmellows in the topping. Ugh... I'm just really sick of being "different." I know my lil' scooby gets tired of being different as well. She came home one day last week wanting me to tell her teacher that I was a vegan and that she is a vegetarian like her daddy. Well I didn't write that letter to her teacher that she wanted me to. I suppose I will get around to it. My hubby and I decided when I went vegan that we'd let her choose if she wanted to be vegan or vegetarian. We disuade her as much as possible from consuming any non-vegan (vegetarian) foods. I breastfed my daughter because I believe its not natural for human beings to consume the milk of another species. I believe that hormones in dairy and eggs cause an exceleration of puberty in children. That said I don't think a cupcake or slice of cheese pizza once in a while are detrimental to her health. Her choice to be vegan has to be her own. And based on her own firmly held beliefs that consuming animal products is wrong. I think she leans towards what her daddy believes.. "its okay as long as I'm not eating an actual animal I don't have to feel guilty." But if she is persistant about wanting to eat something we allow her to as long as it is vegetarian. I hate this compromise I make in my beliefs for her. I try to respect my husband's decision to be lacto-ovo-vegetarian as he respects my choice to be vegan. And at the end of the day if its okay for daddy to eat then she can make that choice too.

December 19, 2005

Today's lunch will consist of a smartdeli turkey slice rolled up and put in a container with hummus and baby carrots. We were home yesterday and I let her have some veggie chickn nuggets (why can't I have these in my lunch box she said - well I think they'd be soggy by lunchtime I can't imagine they'd taste good), a baggy of baby carrots and some hummus for dipping (a great idea for the lunchbox:) if I do say so myself), and some yoghurt - which she eats some yoghurt practically everyday as her pediatrician said to give her 3 servings of dairy substitute a day.

Today's Incident

Scooby was stabbed in the palm of her hand today by a little girl after school. She was screaming and crying unrelentlessly when I picked her up. She wanted me to take her to the hospital - I took her home. I washed the wound out and poured peroxide on it. Then I called poison control. Okay I'm not stupid - I know pencils aren't made out of lead anymore. But my husband was working late and I have nobody smarter than me to ask for help. I had no clue how to get it out. The lady from poison control said to just let it work itself out over the next few days. All I could think is she is going to be falling on that hand a whole lot over the next few days and I need it to stop hurting her NOW. We are four days away from her first Nutcracker on Ice solo. After three years of figure skating and small parts in the show this is a big deal. She fell on it a few times at practice tonight. So I guess it is okay. We just need to survive the next few days.
Whether or not the little girl did it on purpose I don't know. Sometimes I am such a bad mom. I find myself having NO clue what to do. I just do the best I can - always the best that I can.

December 6, 2005

Monday's lunch consisted of baked beans, strawberry o'soy yoghurt and apple juice. Tuesday's lunch consisted of 3 smartdogs in blankets, peach o'soy yoghurt, raisins and apple-grape juice. Both repeats of previous meals. Overall scooby still seems to be eating much, much less food. She is going to the dentist tomorrow and maybe he'll pull that second loose tooth. I really think its hurting is what is causing her to eat so little right now. She's taking her vitamins everyday so hopefully she is getting all the nutrition she needs. Eventhough I pack fruit everday in her lunchbox it is returned to me each evening.. yesterday I had her eat her peaches before she could have dinner and tonight I will do the same with her orange slices but I don't expect her to eat it at school.

December 1st 2005

Little Scooby's meal is a mac and veggie cheese that I got from a recipe off of www.vegweb.com and it turned out really good. I put the elbow macaroni in a pot and just covered it in Imagine No-Chicken Broth and boiled for about ten minutes. Then I added a little soy cheese right on top. There are few versions of vegan cheese but I've only been able to find vegan singles which I don't like as much as veganrella. Any store execs reading this listen up - VEGANRELLA. Anyway so I added a slice on top of the macaroni. Altogether little scooby is getting the mac'n'cheese, raisins, orange slices and an apple-grape minute maid. Oh she also wanted two golden oreos. Its a lot less food than I've been giving her but she seems to be eating much less food lately. So far everyday this week she has came home with her lunchbox half full. Oh and little scooby lost her first tooth on Saturday night. And is about to loose the one next to it. Maybe the missing and loose tooth have something to do with eating less food.

A Vegan Thanksgiving

Sometimes it is hard to see past all the dead turkey carcasses and pilgrims and Indians and the propaganda that surrounds this holiday and just be thankful for the blessings in our lives. This past year has been a rough one for our family. My daughter lost a grandmother at the beginning of the year. My own memories go back to 1979 to Sundays at my gramma's house where my aunts, uncles, and cousins would gather. And my grandmother's brothers and sisters and their children and grandchildren were all very likely to drop in after Church on a Sunday afternoon and stay for hours visiting. My grandmother got polio in 1907 and spent the whole of her life that she could remember unable to walk or run. By 1980, she was unable to get around by herself on her crutches or wheelchair and she came to live with my mom, my dad, my brother and myself. Sundays at Gramma's were suddenly sundays at our house. Gramma died in her sleep on an April day in 1985. That day my brother moved out of the house and it seemed I had lost the two people who I loved most. A house that had been so full of people was empty. My little heart broke as I walked into her bedroom and kissed her good-bye for the last time. No one holding my hand because I was too young to understand. Earlier this year, I held my five-year old's hand as she kissed her own grandmother good bye. I don't know if my daughter will remember her grandmother or not.. I've found that most people's memories don't go back as far as my own so probably not. The best that I can do is talk with her so that she can remember her memories and keep them fresh in her mind.
So here we are after very emotionaly rough year alive and healthy. My grandmother taught me to be thankful for the things that others take for granted - being able to run, walk and play. Everyday I try to teach my daughter that the people we love live on thru us and in us. In how we see the world and in turn make a difference in other people's lives. So this Thanksgiving we are thankful for our health, our family, our friends, and our jobs.

Lil' scooby and me pulling our tofurky jerky wishstix and making a wish for this year.

Our Thanksgiving Feast (this is not all the food.. we had some additional gravy, stuffing, and mashed potatoes but didn't need to have them out). We had a tofurky roast marinaded in orange juice, soy sauce, and brown sugar uh not exactly like how it says to do it on the box no, also baked and marinaded with the roast we had onions, potatoes and carrots. We had a stuffing made with no-chicken broth, mushroom and giblet gravy, vegan mashed potatoes, and a vegan pumpkin pie. We decided we had enough food and we'd leave making the apple pie until later. We also had the tofurky cranberry dumplings - but guess what I defrosted them and I couldn't find a single thing that said what to do should this happen. I obviously couldn't cook them according to the directions - so should this happen to you - I sauteed them over low heat in a frying pan until they were cooked thru and lightly browned on both sides... I lost some of the bread which stuck to the bag but overall they came out okay.

Here's wishing that you all had a peaceful, cruelty-free Thanksigiving.

The Olympics

This isn't a lunch-box or food related post in anyway. I just read on msnbc that the bill to give Tanith Belbin her citizenship failed in Congress yesterday. I can only ask.... WHY? She's lived in this country since she was a teenager and if she'd applied for citizenship just a little bit LATER she'd be an American by now. But because she didn't wait until after 'the rules' had changed she's stuck waiting until after the Olympics for her citizenship. What is wrong with Congress that they don't want the best figure skater in the world right now (yeah I know second at world's so that's kind of opinion) compete in the Olympics. Tanith Belbin will be an American citizen SOMEday.... the 2006 Winter Olympics are coming and the January 10th deadline is right around the corner. A coworker and I went to a vegetarian restaurant down the street from where I work that has in huge letters on top of the building where the name of the restaurant ought to be "VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT." These two women came in - looking for meat on the menu and said they couldn't believe there was no meat anywhere on the menu or buffet. They were being just loud and obnoxious.. I really wanted to say something to them.. you know like 'you bleeping retard did you not read the sign' well obviously they read the sign or else they wouldn't have came in acting the way they were. So I was already in a bad mood when I returned back to work yesterday afternoon.

Today we are having a Thanksgiving potluck. There won't be any turkey.. but I'm sure most of the dishes that will be prepared will have animal broths, cheese or butter at least in them if there isn't any 'meat'. I'd just rather not participate. So when I returned to work I was hassled about not wanting to have to cook for everybody else when nobody else will give a damn about what is there for me to eat. So I kind of got into with several of my coworkers who will now probably put unvegan stuff in whatever they make even if they hadn't planned to in the first place. I was asked about what I do to celebrate Thanksgiving? And what does my family eat? I had to defend our family's choice to eat tofurky. Well why do you have to eat something that is made to look and taste like a turkey and stuft like a turkey. Why do you have to do that? Why do you people always try to mimic your foods to look like ours. I AM so tired of hearing that kind of crap from people. Well for starters of all the holidays I've always hated Thanksgiving the most. As a vegetarian child I snubbed my nose at Thanksgiving and watched football on the tele while eating my cheese pizza. Only in the past ten years since I've been with my hubby and then raising our own child have I even began to sit aside one day a year to be thankful for the blessings in my life. Our extended family and friends are always welcome to share in a peaceful Thanksgiving meal with us. In the beginning we made homemade pastas stuft with spinach and our own sauces. It was a lot work but we were doing it in the name of making our own traditions. But I've come to learn that we don't have to eschew the Tofurky because it 'symbolizes' the sacrificed bird on other families tables. And we can eat a vegan apple pie or pumpkin pie and sweet potatoes, stuffing and gravy. We can be traditional or untraditional or whatever we choose as long as no animals were harmed in the process. And we can be thankful this year without celebrating the conquering of America and the genocide of so-called savage race.

October 25, 2005

Lil' scooby had a hummus and vegan bologna sandwich today. She had 2 - 1/2 smartdogs in blankets. She had a cup of peanut butter with about 8-10 baby carrots for dipping. She had a baggy of grapes. And a couple of olives - she wanted some on the side today because she so loved her sandwich yesterday. She also had some sliced peaches and raisins. And an apple-grape minute maid. Yeah I warned you it was a bit of a hodge-podge. Sorry no picture.

If ya'll don't know I am extremely Anti-McDonalds. What McDonald's did is personal. I know they got sued and they paid their dues - though I did hear that the money they had to pay didn't even end up going to animals but various other not-for-profits. At any rate McDonald's didn't pay ME anything for tricking ME into eating dead animals for years when *I* was a child. As if ANY amount of money could make up for what they did. I know they have a disclaimer now that says something to the effect of "McDonalds makes no claim that any item on their menu is in any way vegetarian." Where was that label 14 years ago when I was a high school athlete having to eat freaking french fries to hold me over after a game or meet until I got home. Yeah its personal and my intense hatred of all things McDonald's is not going away.

Yesterday was McDonald's day at school. Which means a portion of the proceeds went to my daughter's school so they were advocating all the kids to tell their parents to take them to McDonalds. She had a little McDonald's bookmark that I made her throw away. "You are not allowed to have anything that says McDonalds on it" On the drive home I talked to her about did she know why. "Because McDonald's is evil and they kill animals and sell them for people to eat." I'm still thinking about how to explain why that answer was wrong. We eat at other fast food places and restaurants that 'kill animals and sell them to people to eat' so why is McDonalds a special case. Well other than the fact they don't sell anything even remotely vegetarian. So I'm working on that talk with her. I don't want my daughter brainwashed into believing stupid crap. I don't even know how much I can fight of it. Well that is why I have my blog huh.

Adopt A Farm Animal

Every year we talk about adopting a turkey for Thanksgiving www.adoptaturkey.org and so far we haven't. We certainly need people to take care of rescued animals. We are going to adopt a turkey next month. Little scooby and I will post a picture of our adopted turkey then. But for today and the subject of today's post for only a few dollars a paycheck we have adopted a farm animal (the money goes to all the animals - but we get an adoption certificate and picture of one animal) and we have adopted a rabbit. Our adopted rabbit will help us to remember the importance of supporting Farm Sanctuary. I'm *planning* to continue to support Farm Santuary by - well for one - buying lil scooby a Farm Sanctuary teeshirt (maybe one for me too - feel free to make suggestions for which style you like best), other apparel, videos, books etc where proceeds will support Farm Sanctuary. This year I am getting off my butt and doing a real lesson in teaching compassion to my child.
http://www.farmsanctuary.org/adopt/sponsor.htm

Scooby's Lunch for October 12, 2005
In honor of October - An eyeball sandwich - this is hummus on whole wheat pita bread with olives stuffed in. (Daddy said she could have cereal - not the specified cereal that has gelatin in it). For crying out loud Peta has a whole list of suitable cereals pick one of those. Well there it is - a forbidden fruit. And a driven little girl who is desiring what she cannot have. I have won the battle but not the war. I can't always be there to say no.. especially as she gets older. I guess with October and All Souls' Day coming up and everything I've been thinking about people that I've lost. People that it has greived me so dearly to go on living without. Buffy said to Dawn right before she sacrificed herself that dying is easy it is living that is the hard part. We all understand this truth at some point in our lives. I was thinking how long do we greive and how long does that pain last. Is it eternal? Surely I still grieve the loss of my grandmother over 20 years ago but life goes on. My daughter serves as a somewhat constant reminder in that she was named after my gramma (a beautiful old-fashioned name that has made a return in recent years). About 2 years ago my daughter's cat died. Lil scooby took the loss of her pet very hard. She cried incestantly for months. Even over a year later she would break out crying for no reason and when asked what was wrong she would say with tears running down her cheeks 'my cat died' well perfect mother that I am I was really getting frustrated with that. Enough already its time to get over the cat dying. Do we ever really get over loss? We find beauty in life and we go on living. But I think the loss is still there and we always hurt. And today its okay to cry for someone (our ca's included) who we lost 2 years ago or 20 years ago.

October 4, 2005

No picture again today.. I'm sorry I didn't recharge my batteries. Such is the life of a figure skating mommy. Today scooby got a hummus and shredded carrots sandwich on whole wheat pita bread, orange slices, and raisins. To drink she got a minute-maid apple juice. I was very upset with how little of her fruits and veggies she ate yesterday so she got much less food today.

October 3, 2005

I don't think I'm going to bother with a picture today. The batteries are dead in my camera and the food is all put away in the fridge. I'll charge my camera batteries overnight but I'll be busy in the morning.. no time for pictures. Anyway so here what scooby will have for Monday I cut up two slices of smartdeli turkey flavour into 6 small pieces each so 12 total pieces. I packed 8 crackers so that she can make 4 small cracker sandwiches. She has a mix of frozen berries (that shouldn't be frozen anymore by the time she eats them) of strawberries, blueberries, rasberries, and blackberries. A cup of sliced peaches. And a baggie of broccoli and carrots. The dip didn't come out so good. I think she'll be fine eating them plain until I can test some more dip recipes...

Just wanted to add some ranting.. I'm so tired of having to go to like 3 different stores to get what I need. I have to go to Whole Foods to get Vegenaise. And our Whole Foods didn't have ANY soy yoghurt. Well my daughter hates Silk so it has to be the O'soy kind and I'm almost out of those. I guess another trip to Kroger's is in order - and Kroger's doesn't have Vegenaise!!!!! Yeah I use Nayonaise to avoid having to make extra trips to Whole Foods to get nothing but Vegenaise. It is just a pain - I can't even get soy yoghurt from Whole Foods. I used to drive to Whole Foods every so often to get Tofurky Jurky but the last couple of times I've been there they haven't even had that. I can't get Tofurky Jurky anywhere. Harris Teeter if you are reading this PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE start carrying tofurky jurky, vegenaise and French Vanilla flavoured Silk creamer.. so I don't have to shop at all these other stores!

September 30, 2005

No vegetables in today's lunchbox. Scooby has 4 mini-veggie pig'n'blankets. These are two smartdogs cut in half and baked in dough. She got to wrap them and put them in the oven herself. She has a peach o'soy yoghurt and a box of raisins. And since there was about 2 small brownies left she gets another brownie for tomorrow.. they are pretty awesome brownies I can't blame her for wanting another. To drink she is getting another Minute-maid apple-grape juice which is her favourite beverage next to chocolate soy milk (which I tend to limit to breakfast odd I know).

Today's lunch

Nothing fancy today for my first post. Today my daughter (who I'll call scooby from now on - cause she is a nosy-butt) got a PB&J (which she likes / I hate) with o'soy strawberry soy yoghurt, baby carrots, sliced oranges and a vegan brownie. I made vegan brownies over the weekend and I'm ready for them to be finished up and out of the house. For beverage she had minute-maid apple-grape juice. When I picked her up yesterday her friend said that I need to pack ranch dressing for dipping fruits/veggies in. I located a vegan ranch dressing recipe off of vegweb.com and will try to make some this weekend. Maybe Monday we'll have a dipping type lunch. Her friend's comment made me wonder if maybe scooby is sharing her lunches? I tend to fix her a lot of food because I don't want her to get hungry.
